Chirp For A Cause is the charitable arm of Chirp Research whose mission is to pay it forward and do good in the world. In September, our team visited My Possibilities in Plano, Texas, to see the impact our donation is having and participate in their Day of Inclusion.
My Possibilities (MP) is the first full-day, year-long continuing education and job placement program in North Texas, aimed to give adults with Intellectual and/or Development Disabilities (IDD) the chance at higher education, self-directed living and an opportunity to let their untapped possibilities shine. Their Day of Inclusion allows corporate donors to tour the facility and get to know their residents while participating in education/training activities.
My Possibilities began when three mothers first envisioned a life in which their young adult sons with IDD would thrive. They dreamt of a program that would provide education, job training, and residential opportunities for their deserving children. For 15 years, MP has paved the way for inclusion and advocacy on behalf of adults with IDD. What started in a small storefront-turned-school supporting only 10 Hugely Important People (HIPsters) quickly blossomed into a collegiate-style campus serving over 500 individuals a week through high-quality continued education and vocational programming.
Members of the Chirp team worked with students in the culinary training classroom and participated in an education program about physical fitness. We were all so impressed with the engagement and excitement among students and the way the teachers attune to them by providing differentiated activities and tailoring their curriculum to a wide range of abilities. During our tour, we learned that continuing education and residential care are huge unmet needs, with tens of thousands of adults with IDD awaiting government assistance.
My Possibilities is currently preparing to open a new wing of their facility that will allow for increased vocational training and a residential program.
